Turtle Creek Association Celebrates Earth Month
With Electronics Recycling Event
It is estimated that 75% of electronics that could have been recycled or reused are thrown into landfills where certain components contaminate the environment with toxic substances such as lead and mercury. Thirteen organizations that are members of the Oak Lawn / Turtle Creek / Uptown Community Roundtable are celebrating Earth Month by hosting an E-Recycle Day April 12 at Reverchon Recreation Center. Turtle Creek Association, a non-profit organization whose primary focus is to enhance, preserve and protect the Turtle Creek Corridor, continues their commitment to green initiatives by organizing the event in cooperation with the Dallas Park and Recreation Department.
The community is encouraged to drop off unwanted televisions, computers, monitors, cell phones, fax machines and “just about anything with a plug” between 8:00 am and 12:00 noon during E-Recycle Day. Commodity Recycling Solutions is sponsoring the event. Many electronics contain toxic materials such as antimony, arsenic, lead, and mercury that seep into the ground at landfills.
“When Turtle Creek Association member Sherry Travers approached me with the idea, I thought this would be perfect for a community-wide event that would benefit the entire Oak Lawn / Turtle Creek / Uptown neighborhoods,” said Jon Beasley, President/CEO of Turtle Creek Association. “The members of our Community Roundtable decided to adopt the effort as an opportunity for us to do our part to protect the environment.”
The Community Roundtable and sponsoring organizations are Cedar Springs Merchant Association, Dallas Park and Recreation Department, Dallas Tavern Guild, Friends of the Katy Trail, Friends of Reverchon Park, Lee Park and Arlington Hall Conservancy, Oak Lawn Library Friends, State-Thomas Area Residents, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, The Oak Lawn Committee, Trinity Strand Trail, Turtle Creek Association and Uptown Dallas, Inc.
Materials accepted between 8:00 am and 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 12 at Reverchon Recreation Center - 3505 Maple Ave.
